When Boromir decides to take up the quest, more than Gondor is on his mind.

Written for the LJ "lotr100" challenge on moments of decision, when there is no turning back.


When I spoke of dreaming, I saw what none other saw, the narrowing of your eyes. When you heard my avowed intent to seek the broken blade, I read the tension in your mouth. When I told the council I must go, I watched your breath catch, stolen.

I knew what you wondered. Does he lie?

For you, I would. Yet it was no lie.

My words became the choice. With one dream, I claimed the task and stopped you. Your eyes, your mouth, your breath told me I did wrong. Then your words became the choice. You said nothing.
