Written for B2MeM month 2010:

The Anduin River Challenge: Your character comes to a large body of water. He or she can see the shore on the other side. How would your character get across to the other shore?

“So this is where all that cording and scrap lumber the workmen complained were disappearing went to,” Imrahil, Heir to Dol Amroth commented.

In the center of the largest of the five ornamental fish ponds that graced Dol Amroth’s legendary gardens a ramshackle pile of boards and string floated. Upon it, wet and miserable and green with pond scum, knelt six-year-old Amrothos, obviously afraid to move much lest his fragile creation break apart. The pond was over his head in the deepest part.

“I don’t see a pole or any paddles,” his father added mildly. “A source of motive power is always helpful when designing any water craft.”

“I forgot!” growled Amrothos. “I’ll get it right the next time.”

“You speak as if there is going to be a next time.” Imrahil seated himself on the coping and began pulling his boots and tunic off.

“I could build a bridge instead!” Despite his misery, Amrothos seemed much taken by this idea of a sudden.

The young Prince sighed, and waded in.
