| Sometimes she feels like a mere distraction. He was always Mr. Frodo's, from when as children she'd watch him turn like a flower to the sun, to when they left and came back a year later and so changed. And now, like a widower's next wife, she watches his face as he stares at nothing, she hears the name he sighs in his sleep, she kisses his cheek and knows why she tastes tears. She puts a baby on his lap, and he smiles and kisses her, and his eyes fill with the life before him. Until the next time. |
