I loved this very thoughtful vignette. You managed to show through the eyes of your OC how things had changed for the better under the rule of Aragorn and Faramir, and the healing of the land and the people under their care. I loved its poignancy too, and the fact that you the loss that lay underneath the present prosperity of the land.

Well done.

A truly beautiful story; I had tears in my eyes when I finished it, both times I read it. The narrator's voice was just perfect: calm, matter-of-fact about life's tragedies and triumphs, but still sympathetic and kind - pretty much exactly as I'd imagine someone brave enough to help resettle once-abandoned lands. The piecemeal, almost casual way that her own full story is told fits so well into this characterization, and the entire tone and feeling of the story is wonderful.

I didn't guess at the identity of the rangers until the Prince-King comments at the end, but I agree with others that it really didn't matter. For me, the emotional impact came more with Eilen and the settlers' stories and daily courage, and the blessed peace of the Fourth Age they "woke up" to one day. Aragorn and Faramir's interactions were icing on the cake (and also well done!).

Too many beautiful phrases to list, but some of them: "impossible courtesy," "fellow fools and hopefuls," "soft grey speech," "a smile of unusual and vivid beauty," and that whole lovely, heart-breaking paragraph that starts "Oh, but these new songs..."

Thank you for sharing this!
