I love this in more ways than I can begin to tell you. The intense gaze of little Leof, beginning his lifelong love affair with chess. The rain on the windowpanes. Chess, yet again, as the marker and denominator of the stages of Faramir's life, and the use of the memories of the long-drawn-out games - of course, true chess players never forget a move and would know exactly where they were when every one was made. Poor Amrothos, that moment when he has to cover his face as he sees again just what damage was done to Faramir, and how he has survived it.

Lovely moments of dialogue - "He said he couldn’t bear to think of me without a chess set. Like the Sun without the Moon, or egg without bacon.” “Well, look at this,” Faramir said, wonderingly. “A stranger in a bag.” “You took me swimming in the Anduin and we blew up a bridge.” And the final look forward to Leof's future, learning to be a ranger in Ithilien. Just gorgeous, every line.
