| | Journal Main Read Journal Entry Blog_display Hethlin of Anorien By:Isabeau February, 25 2006 I know CMC's a done deal, but since I intend to give it a thorough editing in the future, I'll include it in this thread, as well as make this a place for any other Heth questions not appropriate for the Silver Swan thread. Comment: Isabeau wrote: I'm thinking Halaran and Liranael might have had a book or two, maybe even a handful. They were of course destroyed when the farm was burned. But it's interesting to speculate about what they might have been about.... Yes -- I was thinking the same thing; although not so much about what the books would be about, but how they came into Liranael's possession (I'm thinking they were her books, for some reason). I was wondering if maybe before she left for the south with Halaran her mother (or father, but seems like a more motherly thing) might have given her some treasured family books. Maybe a history of Numenor? Maybe an illustrated book about botany? One thing that seems unlikely to me is a book about more recent Dunedain history or heritage. But actually my point about how terribly expensive books were before the advent of the printing press is that in order for children to be taught how to read, there would be a need for either schools or books in the home. From what I know about Anorien in your stories, it seems like the latter would be quite rare, and the former nonexistant.
