Hethlin of Anorien
February, 25 2006
I know CMC's a done deal, but since I intend to give it a thorough editing in the future, I'll include it in this thread, as well as make this a place for any other Heth questions not appropriate for the Silver Swan thread.
Isabeau: ...though I do think it's possible that Faramir was aware on some level of Heth's feelings, given that he's supposed to be a perceptive fellow.
I think you could make a case for any of those reasons... I don't think Imrahil knows enough about Heth's battle capabilities to judge her (they only fought together that one time), although grunt soldier to captain is a bit of a jump no matter how good you are. And Faramir spent so much energy trying to not think of Hethlin as a woman when she was in the Rangers that he still seems to struggle with changing his perception of her, though he's doing better. I would not be surprised if he had subconsciously noticed her regard and "blinded" himself to it in order to avoid any additional temptation. It could help explain how his fabled ability to see into the hearts of men failed him in the case of this one woman. Then again, Altariel's AGoC shows him pretty dense about Eowyn and her issues, too - maybe it's just women in general he has trouble with...
Faramir's denseness where Heth is concerned still annoys me at times, especially when he's trying to push her towards Imrahil or refusing to see how good Elrohir has been for her. He knows her history! I suppose subconsciously I was kind of hoping she did find out about the Ranger lieutenancy just so she'd have a reason to give him a good swift kick in the rear.
What do you think Hethlin really believes about Imrahil's declaration of love? Is she taking it seriously at this point, or is her low self-image (so conscious of her scars, etc.) making her think it's just an infatuation on his part that he'll eventually "get over"? Her way of dealing with it makes me think it's the latter, since it basically amounts to avoiding him personally, and especially avoiding thinking about or discussing it with anyone. Sort of a "If I ignore it, it will go away" approach to the whole issue, though I guess actually it would if she went North.
Finally... re: Rebecca's question in comment #29 - was there really a Heth and Elrohir portrait at one time? What a tragedy if it was lost.
