Princes of Dol Amroth
February, 25 2006
Questions about the life and times of Imrahil and his family can be asked here, including questions about Ultimatums, Kin-Strife and the shorter stories. Discussions about Brand can go either here or in the Best-Loved Son thread, since his stories sort of overlap both cycles.
Basically Aragorn "solved" the problem of Hethlin not by taking her under his own wing, nor by making sure her maternal kin stepped up to their responsibility, but by foisting Hethlin off onto Dol Amroth -- even though Aragorn knew about Imrahil's feelings for Hethlin!
IIRC, Aragorn only learned of Imrahil's feelings after she had become a part of the Dol Amroth household. There was the public declaration in CMC and then Imrahil went privately to Aragorn to say that there might be a problem with that, well, because...
But since the Andrahar who has developed since DAY was written is pretty reflective and self-aware I just have a hard time reconciling him with the Andrahar who punched Hethlin in the face.
I agree with you there, but I think it also shows in a very poignant way the flaws, or the human limitations of him. I admit I was really, really grateful when Andra confessed to Brand in "Reparation" that he did in fact act very wrong and then went public with his confession. This was a very needful resolution to this plot thread, I find.
Isabeau, I understand what you mean about eventually toning it down. As it stands on it's own in DAY, it truly seems a bit harsh. But, I think with the context of the other stories, and especially you want to embedd DAY in the larger context of Silver Swan, I think the "problem" will even itself out sufficiently.
