Tolkien Fan Fiction Home Tolkien Fan FictionAll the tales of the Valar and the Elves are so knit together that one may scarce expound any one without needing to set forth the whole of their great history.

[11] Me: (On a story of Faramir and Eowyn visiting Dol Amroth) I know it will be a very summery story.

Denise: Weeelllll, guess what season is around the corner! (hint hint, again) :)

Heh! Well, spring seems to have almost sprung here, let's see if my subconscious stirs itself too.

 [12] Hi, Altariel,

I have the impression that you are temporarily on reprieve from teaching (and I understand the sense of relief - my husband is a teacher), and since I have been bugging Isabeau with questions quite a bit lately I have decided to "share the wealth" and bug you with this one. I've wondered for a while: How did you and Isabeau end up sharing the Unabeauverse? You two really have one of the best and most complementary collaborations I've ever seen, and it is a marvelous bonus for us readers as we get twice the stories of our favorite characters! How was the Unabeauverse conceived?

[13] Hi Denise; yes, I'm definitely on reprieve - I teach on two undergraduate courses and they don't start up again until October! Until then, I'm writing full-time, so keep your fingers cross as I try to complete my first original novel...

How did you and Isabeau end up sharing the Unabeauverse? How was the Unabeauverse conceived?

The tales grew in the telling is the only answer! :-D When The Fellowship of the Ring came out, I think many people started looking for Tolkien-based fanfic. For some reason that I can't recall (given he's not in the film and he had never been a particular favourite, unlike Eowyn), I started looking for fiction about Faramir (I suspect it might have been something to do with Sean Bean's performance of Boromir, and thinking about the ramifications of Boromir's death on his family).

I found Love Sweet as Poison and Father and Sons by Dwimordene at ff.net, and something went *ping* in my head, and next thing I knew, I was sitting at my desk, scribbling the start of The Fire Sermon on a piece of A4 file paper.

I was still hunting around (ravenously, as I recall) for fiction about Faramir, and I noticed a story that was following Faramir from when he leaves Ithilien, from the POV of a young female Ranger... I read the first chapter and thought, "You know, this is pretty damn good...", and then I read the second chapter, got to the Chicken Man, and knew I was in the presence of genius! :-D I emailed the author to tell her how much I was enjoying her story, and the next thing I knew we were sharing story and character ideas, and we shared a lot of opinions, and I love Isabeau's writing and characterization so much - and then things just sort of began to merge, really.

Isabeau, what's your recollection?

[14] Altariel: ...as I try to complete my first original novel...

That's wonderful, Altariel! I certainly wish you the best of luck, and lots and lots of uninterrupted time to write. (I will confess a momentary flash of pure selfishness, when I thought, "Oh no! She won't have much time for fanfic!" But fortunately my baser half - as Elrohir would call it - did not win out.)

So The Fire Sermon was your first fanfic? I hope you framed that piece of A4 file paper.

...and then I read the second chapter, got to the Chicken Man, and knew I was in the presence of genius!

LOL! I still love that scene and particular characterization, among so many others. So is the Unabeauverse due to fate or chance? I myself prefer to think that it was always meant to exist...

LOL! Thank you for the good wishes! I'm trying hard to work out a way of writing both book and fanfic simultaneously: I tend to get so absorbed in a single project that I find it hard to concentrate on anything else, but I miss writing in the Unabeauverse too much when that happens, so I need to learn a new process.

So The Fire Sermon was your first fanfic?

My first Tolkien fanfic. I'd written quite a few stories based on Blake's 7 and on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

So is the Unabeauverse due to fate or chance? I myself prefer to think that it was always meant to exist...

"A chance meeting, as they say in Bree..." ;-)

 [16] Altariel asked-Isabeau, what's your recollection?

That's pretty much it. I think we really started trying to match things up while you were writing Chess. Which is why Fire Sermon and its companion pieces kind of stand by themselves, since they were written before we started collaborating.

I'll debate the genius thing for myself, but I do think no-one writes as purely poetic prose as Altariel when she really hits her stride. I don't do that. And certainly she has a highly developed sense of symmetry....

The things we write together have been great fun for me. And if I ever do become a professionally published writer, it will be in part at least because of Una's prodding and encouragement.

[17] hey. i realised when reading a game of chess that hethlin was never mentioned. I assumed that she went to war in the east with the others, and during this story Imrahil has never mentioned her even briefly so there are no hints there on whether they have a blossoming romance or not during that time.:( um i have to sell my computer and some other stuff to help pay for college, moneys tight lately.lol. so i will no longer have a computer for the years i am in college and university and probably wont have any regular access to one.so i am sorry to say i can no longer follow yours or isabeau's stories anymore:( I've talked to Isabeau to see if she would mind and she said she didn't, I would like to read some kind of conclusion into the future of Hethlin's romantic life and apparently sensibility does that. If I have your permission as well I would like to read it as sort of a conclusion to everything for me:)pretty please. could you imagine going years without having some kind of conclusion to the stories you have followed from the beginning. It makes me want to cry with frustration just thinking about it.lol.If you were to send it to me by email i would revise it for you if you don't have the time.pretty please with a cherry and sprinkles on top.lol.

hope to hear from you soon.
