Hethlin of Anorien

By:Isabeau
 February, 25 2006

I know CMC's a done deal, but since I intend to give it a thorough editing in the future, I'll include it in this thread, as well as make this a place for any other Heth questions not appropriate for the Silver Swan thread.

 [101] Fling those nuzguls!

Srsly? Because, like, I have a pretty long Unabeauverse wish-list, much of which doesn't even touch on Who Heth Nests With.

Another nice pic, Nargil! *g*

[102] Thanks for the strawberries, Nargil! They were very nice to come home to after my daily bike ride! And I didn't even dip them in chocolate (though I was tempted...)!

Seriously. I know people have mentioned stuff in the past, but it would be interesting to see their lists, provided they contain something other than a desire for me to finish my WIPs, which I also want to do, but won't happen until certain plot points are clear in my mind. Though I could probably go ahead and finish Blackbow... The problem is, I've been trying to write original fiction lately, and I promised E.W. over 60,000 words by her birthday, which is a month off and I only have half that. So I can't promise anything right away, but it's possible that one of your nuzguls will fang me.

[104] Weeeeelllll... Leaving out anything that might involve hints as to future events, I'd love to see stories about:

* Heth and Arcag taking down their first mumak
* Andrahar holding Elphir for the first time (and/or: the first time Andra feels the "Uncle" connection with Imri's kids)
* Imri is blooded/first kill/battle
* Elladan keeping his promise about the eagle feather (CMC ch. 27)
* Adrahil's vision of Nimrien where he perhaps knew she wouldn't be princess, and had the Imri/Nimrien portrait made that Brand and Imri look at in "Confirmation"

And then more questions vs. story wishes: What do Haradrim think of a battle-related illness like Faramir's post-war inability to fight? What would Andra's reaction be if/when he finds out about it? And is there a specific experience of Faramir's that leads him to be so certain of Eowyn’s reaction to his illness? (That last one may be better directed to Altariel, actually, since it comes from "A Game of Chess".)

Good luck with hitting your target for E.W.'s birthday!!

[105] And, in case your nuzguls are even a little tempted by Denise's list:

- Hethlin being Arwen's bodyguard from the point of view of others (eg. the ladies-in-waiting) - both in patriarchal Gondor and in the even more rigid society of Harad (assuming Arwen ever travels there)

- What Hethlin's extended family think of her, especially the ones still in the North?

- Heth ranging with the Northern rangers - does she ever do that?

[106] Jumping in with my wish-list here (or the version that doesn't involve things that may come up in Silver Swan etc):

* Some of the meetings that Aragorn mentions in Chapter 19 of CMC, from various people wanting to talk to him about his decision to move Heth to Dol Amroth - particularly the one with Mablung and the Rangers. I've always been curious as to what exactly they thought about having Heth suddenly removed from Ithilien.

* The 'conversation' between Faramir and Elrohir before Heth arrives in Chapter 52.

* Andra telling Brand about Imrahil's offer of marriage to Heth.

Also, I was wondering if Heth knows about Andra and Boromir's relationship. I always assumed she would, and then realised that it isn't the sort of thing anyone would feel it necessary to discuss with her.

Apparently, I'm incurably nosy about private conversations!

P.S. If you decided to finish Blackbow when you have time I'd be thrilled. I've really enjoyed it both times I've read it, particularly Boromir's recurring feeling that Heth needs to stay by Faramir. Foreshadowing is so much fun sometimes.

This one is very possible. It comes in Blackbow.
* Andrahar holding Elphir for the first time (and/or: the first time Andra feels the "Uncle" connection with Imri's kids)
I was thinking of something of the kind the other day, but I was also contemplating a companion piece to Motherless, which told about Nimrien's death from Andra's point of view.
* Imri is blooded/first kill/battle
Interesting. Do you know I've never thought about that?
* Elladan keeping his promise about the eagle feather (CMC ch. 27)
Oh come on! Do you think I'd embarrass the poor fellow?
* Adrahil's vision of Nimrien where he perhaps knew she wouldn't be princess, and had the Imri/Nimrien portrait made that Brand and Imri look at in "Confirmation"
Another interesting idea. I haven't written Adrahil very much at all, but he's usually very clear when he deigns to speak to me. We'll have to see if he wants to talk about this.

And then more questions vs. story wishes: What do Haradrim think of a battle-related illness like Faramir's post-war inability to fight? What would Andra's reaction be if/when he finds out about it?
I had written a little scene with Andra and Brand the night before he meets Faramir (in The Lost), where Brand asks about his uncle and Andra describes him as a man who was forced to be a warrior despite his temperament and inclination and was a very good one. I don't think he knows the truth about Faramir's situation, although it's possible Imrahil might speak of it. Not knowing, I think he would simply assume that Faramir had laid his sword down willingly, and not think anything about it. Knowing, I still don't think he would think the worse of Faramir for it-he has undoubtedly seen comrades of his who came under the Black Breath and perhaps were ruined for war. He would be of the opinion that if you had lost your nerve for battle, you were well out of it. He would fault Faramir much more if he tried to lead men despite that and got them killed.

And is there a specific experience of Faramir's that leads him to be so certain of Eowyn’s reaction to his illness? (That last one may be better directed to Altariel, actually, since it comes from "A Game of Chess".)
Yes, that one you need to direct to Altariel. Please do-she's gotten off the hook lately!
Good luck with hitting your target for E.W.'s birthday!!
Thanks! I just need to suck it up and hit the keyboard.

You may see this one day in the very distant future. It would be a one-off story dealing with a diplomatic mission to Harad. More than that I can't tell you.
- What Hethlin's extended family think of her, especially the ones still in the North?,
I'm sure Litharel takes back a favorable report.
- Heth ranging with the Northern rangers - does she ever do that?
She may get a chance to do that and meet some of her family when she goes north to Dale.

 [109] Lisa's list:
* Some of the meetings that Aragorn mentions in Chapter 19 of CMC, from various people wanting to talk to him about his decision to move Heth to Dol Amroth - particularly the one with Mablung and the Rangers. I've always been curious as to what exactly they thought about having Heth suddenly removed from Ithilien.

It's not real likely at present, but I could get bitten when I go back to editing CMC. A conversation between the Rangers might be a lot of fun!
* The 'conversation' between Faramir and Elrohir before Heth arrives in Chapter 52.
You don't ask for the easy ones, do you? Not sure I'll ever address this, because I'm not sure anything I could write would be as good as what people imagine for themselves.
* Andra telling Brand about Imrahil's offer of marriage to Heth.
This is one I should probably think about, at least the context that would make Andra talk about it, since more than one person (and I think you were one?) has rightly commented that it's not really good of Andra to be bandying Imrahil's private business about to his very young great-nephew.
Also, I was wondering if Heth knows about Andra and Boromir's relationship. I always assumed she would, and then realised that it isn't the sort of thing anyone would feel it necessary to discuss with her.

Apparently, I'm incurably nosy about private conversations!

Well, Heth spent an awful lot of time in CMC overhearing things she shouldn't have known about! This is a very interesting question, Lisa, and it has the sharpest fangs of all your nuzguls. Heth's relationship with Boromir is not as close as that with Faramir, but it's a lot more involved than I originally believed. I'll have to give this one some thought.
P.S. If you decided to finish Blackbow when you have time I'd be thrilled. I've really enjoyed it both times I've read it, particularly Boromir's recurring feeling that Heth needs to stay by Faramir. Foreshadowing is so much fun sometimes.
Thank you! It needs about two more chapters. (No, really it does. Just two!) Poor Boromir, he never gets anything definite from his wonky version of the Dol Amroth gift, except for the one dream in Visions.

[110] *points to illereyn and lisa's lists*

Ooooo! I like those!

Andra telling Brand about Imrahil's offer of marriage to Heth.
Even the continuation: How does Imrahil figure/find out that Brand knows? They definitely seem to have an understanding in Passages. Although, thinking about it, I wonder if Andrahar wouldn't just come clean to Imrahil that he'd told the secret, intentionally or unintentionally, once the dust settles over Imrahil finding out about Brand. In fact, I'd love to see the scene where Andrahar tells Imrahil that he's found Boromir's son! Maybe you can roll it all up into the scene of Andrahar telling Imrahil that he smacked down Hethlin... *hopeful look*

I was wondering if Heth knows about Andra and Boromir's relationship.
I wondered about that, too, when she told Brand in Passages that he should make up with Andrahar. Although I feel like Heth's sensitive enough to simply want that for the two of them, even without knowing all the background info.

Go, nuzguls, go! :)
