Princes of Dol Amroth

By:Isabeau

Questions about the life and times of Imrahil and his family can be asked here, including questions about Ultimatums, Kin-Strife and the shorter stories. Discussions about Brand can go either here or in the Best-Loved Son thread, since his stories sort of overlap both cycles.

[241] So...in Unabeauverse the star brooch is given at the discretion of the Chieftain, whether or not the person has actually served with the Northern Rangers. From what Elrohir said, I gather that the only requirements are that the recipient has achieved a certain standard in fighting (and woodcraft?) skills, fought orcs and other creatures of evil, and has Northern Dunedain blood. Is that right?

That's it, pretty much. I figure Aragorn might be giving out more stars eventually, to some of the Ithilien Rangers. And doing a bit of an exchange program, sending Northern Rangers South and vice-versa.

Also, is the star brooch normally passed from father to son/daughter like Heth's? What happens when there's a second son who wants to become a Ranger?

They get a star of their own, and pass it to their children. The firstborn gets the original star. It's not graven in stone-if there was an uncle who had a star and had only daughters, he could give it to his nephew, things like that.

And since I'm on a roll, I wonder whether Heth actually ever serves with the Northern Rangers whose star she wears and learns whether it is similar/different to the Ithilien Rangers?
*ducks as nuzgul jumps out*

Maybe...(hands in pockets, whistling)

I hope that's not _too_ many questions?!!! XP

To quote my favorite wizard-"If the giving of information is to be the cure of your inquisitivness, I shall spend all the rest of my days answering you. What more do you want to know?" No, really it's not too many-I'm glad you're so interested.

Is there a sequal to tattoo BTW?

*sits on hands some more*

Not so far. Not saying it couldn't happen.

[243] Thanks for answering me, Isabeau!

'Maybe...(hands in pockets, whistling)', eh?

Well, I guess that's yet another reason to look forward to your next story! XD

You've done it now, I fear the only way to answer all the questions is to find some way to convince the Tolkien estate to let you write for money and we all pay you and and then you can write full time.

As for questions:

Do you go with Soledad's Version that Imrahil ran away to live with the Elves for a couple of years before he met Andra and if so what on earth did they fight about?

Do Heth and Andra actually get along or is it more that they repect each others competence by the time Passages comes along?

Did Eomer/Eowyn ever meet Rahur, I'm wondering if the Rohirim have an opinion on such cute cuddley warhorses?

Do the Dol-Amroth horses have Meras or Elven blood given Imri has such good ties to all both places?

Does Arwen know how to fight?

*sits on hands Again* Sorry they write to much, abit like Brands mouth, they say what springs to mind.

I honestly haven't decided that one yet, though I'm tending towards saying no. I can't imagine Gildor keeping Imrahil against his parents' wishes for that length of time-they're hardly abusive parents. I think Imri might very well have quarreled with them and somehow made his way to Edhellond, but Gildor would have not allowed him to stay very long before he negotiated his return. I have no idea what the quarrel was about either, unless it involved that business with the players.

Do Heth and Andra actually get along or is it more that they repect each others competence by the time Passages comes along?

As you might have guessed, DAY is sort of the low point, and after Reparations, things have started to get better. Andra was rather impressed that Hethlin had behaved as chivalrously as she did during Veleda's capture. And Hethlin had finally come to realize the value of what Andrahar was trying to teach her, that his being hard on her wasn't entirely because she was a woman.

Did Eomer/Eowyn ever meet Rahur, I'm wondering if the Rohirim have an opinion on such cute cuddley warhorses?

They probably saw him during the trip up to Edoras-he wasn't put down until Andra's return to Dol Amroth after that. Their opinions would probably have mirrored Imrahil's-he might be a good warhorse in the right hands, but his temperament made him unsuitable for breeding.

Do the Dol-Amroth horses have Meras or Elven blood given Imri has such good ties to all both places?

They have a lot of Rohan blood, but I doubt Mearas, unless one of them took a shine to one of Imri's ancestors.

Does Arwen know how to fight?

In CMC, I wrote that on the first part of the journey to Minas Tirith from Lorien at least, both she and Galadriel went in breeches and were carrying bows. I can see her being a pretty decent archer. I don't see her being a swordswoman.

I guess that fits in pretty well with the North's generally more open-minded attitude towards women fighting, unless...does Lothiriel shoot as well? Hunting used to be a favourite pastime of the nobility, I know...It would certainly appeal more to Eomer, I guess! XP

[247] Well I don't think things could have got much worse than DAY without a repeat of Kinstrife, It's good that they get along, especially with the love triangle(s)thing you have going on.

Maybe Gildor rescued Imri from the players kept him till smoke stopped spewing from Adrahil's ears and sent him home several interesting chats and a futile crush later. Makes me hope your muse writes more of Kinstrife so we can see the training.

"They have a lot of Rohan blood, but I doubt Mearas, unless one of them took a shine to one of Imri's ancestors."

Or Caerith's.

And come to think of it I think I read about Galadriel fighting somewhere, makes sense she taught Arwen, It will give Heth someone to shoot with when she's stuck being all posh and ladylike.

BTW have you ever read anything by Tamora Pierce?

 [248] Hi, Isabeau,

I don't know individual dogs breeds very well - is there a real-life hound that you have in mind for Morneleg and Luin, et al?

I think you've definitely got a great start to making up for the lack of dogs in Tolkien!

[249] I was actually thinking Irish Wolfhound, Denise. They have a similar range of colors. Only I figure (this is a fantasy after all!) that the King's Hounds live a lot longer. (Giant breeds are notoriously slow to grow up and then they die young. Nine is old for them.)

Luin right now, because of his color and his lighter, adolescent build, probably looks more like a Scottish Deerhound. But he'll fill out eventually.

If I could ever remember how to insert links, I'd find you come pictures. But I'm sure you can Google. The AKC site if nothing else, should have some.

[250] Wow! They are both absolutely beautiful breeds. Yes, it would be nice if they could be around for 20+ years (or more?), particularly a charismatic and loyal hound like Luin. And I can see them being even bigger than the pictures I saw, as super-purebreds started by Elendil's line.

Do you see them as having some Elven influence, since they are connected to the Faithful? Or are the breed's exceptional qualities due to a Numenorean magic touch?
