Princes of Dol Amroth

Questions about the life and times of Imrahil and his family can be asked here, including questions about Ultimatums, Kin-Strife and the shorter stories. Discussions about Brand can go either here or in the Best-Loved Son thread, since his stories sort of overlap both cycles.

 Hi, Isabeau,
One brief section from Passages 12 really peaked my interest, since I'm terribly fond of Liahan: Liahan’s family is proud, and scornful of charity. Their lands are not particularly good, and they have other…expenditures which have put them in the position they are in.
Can you tell us what the "other expenditures" are, or is that part of an upcoming chapter/story? It was great fun to get more background on the family of one of my favorite Swan Knights. I know you said at one point that he was engaged after the Ring War - is he married yet? Kids?
(No, no - Imrahil has no competition *g*, but I do enjoy all your many and varied Swannies, and rather miss seeing Liahan, Esteven, etc.)
My heart aches for Nelladel - she seemed like such a nice person in our brief glimpse of her - and I can't wait to meet Lord Lalwen. I don't suppose that a certain attraction for dogs is a reflection of a RL interest? *vbg*

Valar, I'm trying to remember where I said Liahan was engaged. I know Andrahar mentioned to the stableman in Noble Jewel that he might have the chance to have children since the war was over, but I think that was more of a general observation.
Imrahil says this in CMC-“Do you have any idea how many weddings I am going to have to officiate at when we return to Minas Tirith?” he asked me. “Every member of my personal guard who is not already married and has a sweetheart wishes to wed as soon as possible. And the ones who do not have sweethearts are investing their pay in Minas Tirith’s brothels... but that's more of a general observation than anything specific. If Liahan was in fact betrothed, he would be married by now, and given that it's been almost two years, the odds are good that he either has a little one or there is one on the way.
As for the expenditures, I think that will become obvious her ein the next chapter.

First, many thanks to Google. *g*
Liahan's betrothal is in your main journal, entry #72. Not that it's backstory that can't be changed, of course! But since we're getting more on his family I just wondered how things were going for Liahan himself.
the odds are good that he either has a little one or there is one on the way
Or even both, given his family's historical productivity!
And, yeah, *facepalm* on the expenditures. I read a couple of "Passages" review entries where those readers were much quicker on the uptake than I was... I'm eagerly waiting to see if proposed theories are correct. :)

 Hey Isabeau!
Just a quick question: was browsing through this journal when I came across reference to 'In All But Blood'. What is it exactly? Don't think I've seen it before...

That's because I hadn't posted it anywhere except HASA. It was written for HA's onlist Memorial Day Challenge back in 2003. I let HASA have it, because they had the other stories there, but I didn't bother to post it here or any other place, because quite frankly, things have changed considerably in the Unabeauverse since then. For one thing, Brand did not exist then at all, or even the concept of him. I intend to re-work the ficlet into something longer and better suited to what I'm writing now at some point. But since there are references to it in The Recall, I've pulled it over from HASA so you can see it. It's in my drabble collection. I will be taking it down one day for a more up-to-date version.

 Hey Everyone!
Just a quick question: Did Heth ever receive her father's star from Aragorn? If it hasn't been written yet, does it happen before we see heth esquire training - so she's wearing it during Dol Amroth Yule, or does it happen in Dale? I'm trying to picture her when I'm reading.

Hi, illereyn! That is supposed to happen in Silver Swan, sometime after they leave Edoras to escort Elrond a bit further up the road.
What Heth is wearing in DAY is the silver star circlet that was given her in Lorien.
So she has the star brooch when she goes to Dol Amroth for her training, but since it's not a part of the esquire uniform, she won't wear it unless she is off duty.

Only one scene among many I'm aching to see whenever you can get back to SS... Or maybe your muse will pipe up for short one-offs to "fill in the blanks", so to speak.
Actually, I'm happy with whatever your muse wants to talk about! I hope your writing is going well and that you had a nice summer!

So...in Unabeauverse the star brooch is given at the discretion of the Chieftain, whether or not the person has actually served with the Northern Rangers. From what Elrohir said, I gather that the only requirements are that the recipient has achieved a certain standard in fighting (and woodcraft?) skills, fought orcs and other creatures of evil, and has Northern Dunedain blood. Is that right?
Also, is the star brooch normally passed from father to son/daughter like Heth's? What happens when there's a second son who wants to become a Ranger?
And since I'm on a roll, I wonder whether Heth actually ever serves with the Northern Rangers whose star she wears and learns whether it is similar/different to the Ithilien Rangers?
*ducks as nuzgul jumps out*
I hope that's not _too_ many questions?!!! XP
