|All the tales of the Valar and the Elves are so knit together that one may scarce expound any one without needing to set forth the whole of their great history.|

OK, folks-this is the general forum now for questions that don't seem to fit in any of the other threads. I'm going to sort some of the earlier posts into the appropriate forums, but it might take a while, so bear with me. I'll delete the ones that have already been reposted by their authors.

I was thinking of the fish-heads song as well, as soon as I heard that.
Gee Dwim, better write those nuzguls off your ankles soon-there's not that much of you to gnaw!
Working on my stand-alone story. Hope to have it done over the weekend.

 Dear Isabeau,
I'am writing as I want to get other people's comments from this site. Anyway there is a website called Lulu - where it is very easy to create books from text files (and quite cheap to publish it in fact) - so I've been reading Captain My Captain for years and the chance to be able to see how it would be in book form is one that I could not pass up. So what I did was that I created a book, novel bound over 400 pages - and then paid around 15 dollars for the novel to be shipped book form to my house. I've done this before and the quality of the books is great, its lovely. Anyway I'am awaiting my own bound copy of Captain My Captain in the next few days! I am so excited, of course I did not get any money out of this as I just created the book for my own private use so that I can have it book form. The website I use is great its www.lulu.com - anyway I was wondering what your thoughts are regarding this (and others) - can we create our own books using fanfiction?

 Hi there, Eressa!
I'm thinking that someone else might have had Captain bound on Lulu several years ago. I didn't have a problem then, and I don't now, so long as it is for personal use, as you did. And less I be accused of hypocrisy, textual poacher that I am, I simply don't want to be trounced by the Tolkien estate if someone prints a bunch of them and tries to profit from the Professor's stuff. It's certainly no different from someone printing it out, which several people have done. It's a very long story, and some folks have vision problems when they look at a screen for long periods of time.
I do wonder if someone could print limited copies of fanfiction stories (say, for instance, some of the HA onlist challenge stories) and circulate them in a limited audience (like just for list members). Would that be permissable, like a fanzine? Anyone who knows something about copyright law feel free to chime in! Because I certainly don't...
Do let me know what the book looks like when you get it, Eressa. How is it bound? Did you have artwork for the cover? I'm rather curious.

The bound books sound like a nice idea!
Isabeau, I can't resist the opportunity to ask if we can look forward to anything new about Hethlin?

As I said, I certainly don't have a problem with someone wanting a bound book for their personal collection! I'd like to know what they look like-might like to do some of mine once they're finished.
As for Hethlin, I was reading over a bunch of my stuff yesterday, trying to get back into the groove to actually finish a WIP or two. Unfortunately, Silver Swan is probably on the back burner for that-I would really, really like to finish up Ultimatums, Kin-strife and Blackbow first. Right now, I've got another chapter of Passages I'm finishing, and if it makes you feel better, Hethlin makes another big appearance in that story in a chapter or two.

Ah, too bad.

Too many WIPs has got to be a real hassle -- one is more than I can handle.
Thanks, Isabeau, I hope the writing goes well!

The idea of the stories in book form is fascinating, the idea of a Hethlin trilogy (you mentioned a third Heth story a while back)or just to have the whole universe as a set, Passages, Kin Strife, Reconciliation, Ultimatums and the Best Loved Son stories, you could get EW to do the covers!
Was there not a cover pic for captain a while back?
I can't wait for updates, just when I thought you'd dropped off the edge of the planet

 Dear All,
Comments galore! I know that this may not be the place - but girls (and some guys) we write fanfiction - some of us influenced by the books mostly, but a few inspired by Peter Jacksons opus. We write in canon or an AU. So we know as fans that flexbility to create our own art is something important. Inspired by Tolkien's universe but shaped by our own thoughts and love, to create something new and still rooted in the myth of middle earth.
Now the news has spread. Guillermo del toro is to helm the hobbit film and the sequal (the years in between the hobbit and the start of lord of the rings!) I myself I am soo excited - I loved Pan's labyrinth, one of my favourite films! Whats the fanfiction going to be? Trying to relate this post back to Isabeau's forum, we can ask some questions, what were Hethlin's parents doing during the years between the hobbit and the start of Lord of the Rings - and Imrahil, and my own favourite character Elrohir. Was Elrohir helping Hethlin's father in some way? It's going to be an amazing ride the next few years, and I can't imagine anyone else to do these films - in a weird way I am kinda excited about it not being PJ - like the extended universe of other fanfic authors - its going to be a collarabtion and something beyond! I wonder why I post here, this news, but as part of the fanfic community and an avid reader I just wanted to know the reaction from you all - what are your thoughts? how do you feel? lets go beyond the industry comments about the production, the male fans rabid obsessive detailed approach to the function/effects/action of the movie, but get at to the heart about why I read and love fanfic - how I feel it extends canon. How do we as writers/readers/appreciaters feel about the story, and the story teller of Del toro - his film Pan's labyrinth is something that I love cos it feels feminine, fragile, strong, sad and epic in a small way. Its the story that drives it, the feeling and emotions of the characters. Anyway please ignore my rambling unstructured thoughts, or typos - just wanted to share what I am feeling and see the reaction of a community which I very much value and enjoy watching and being part of.
Just wanted to say Ladies thanks so much for writing great stories.

I'm delighted to hear that you haven't forgotten Kin-strife and Ultimatums as well as Blackbow - I look forward to all of them being finished!
