Isabeau's Journal

By:Isabeau
 November, 12 2005

OK, folks-this is the general forum now for questions that don't seem to fit in any of the other threads. I'm going to sort some of the earlier posts into the appropriate forums, but it might take a while, so bear with me. I'll delete the ones that have already been reposted by their authors.

[211] This is sort of an offshoot of Nargil's earlier question about Caerith and Dol Amroth horses in general. Do the Elven horses descend from ones brought over by the Elves from Valinor? Are they immortal or merely long-lived? Are they related to the mearas in any way? And does Arwen's Elven horse stay in Minas Tirith? Don't know why the last one comes to mind, except that they are so extraordinarily intelligent; and while rereading DAY and thinking on Isabeau's comments about Gull, I started thinking that Arwen's horse might get pretty lonely being stuck among nothing but lesser, mortal horses.

[212] Another question in the queue for Isabeau: Hethlin purchased the harp she gave Elrohir with the gold Haradrim necklace that was her portion of the Ranger booty. Yet in DAY it appears that gold necklace is still in her possession, as she chooses to not wear it because it wouldn't go with her dress. Is it the same necklace?

Oh, and another question I've long had: in The Princes chapter of CMC, how is it that Imrahil came to be in the sick room when Hethlin was curled up with Faramir for warmth? I couldn't really figure out how Elrohir got there either, for that matter, but I figured maybe the mind link alerted him to her injury & fever, and then guided him to the right room. Is that right? Or did Lorend spread the word? (I like Lorend for his cheek!)

Thanks! It's nice that the system has added a time stamp to our posts.

[214] I have a question, When Andra jumps over the table why is he wearing spurs? Do the Swan Kmights wear them all the time or is it just him, I know that wear I ride you are not allowed to put them on untill just before you mount your horse and from all accounts people seem to find even the plain modern spurs easy to trip over allthough I have never needed them myself.

Also what is the Swan Knight uniform like? you mention Andra having some sort of chain and the probationers having a black bordered belt, and do they have horse tails on thier helmets like the Rohirim?

[215] A quetion I thought of whilst I was writing the review, will there be another chapter of Reparations, when Imrahil get there maybe or is this just a one shot?

Also I would like to see Andra's meal with glorfindle, they don't have to DO anything, but it would be nice for him to find an Elf who He didn't wish to hang off the battlements by thier ear points.

[216] Starting to play catch-up here...I'll try not to miss anybody.

I wrote
-our local SCA group is having their big annual event tomorrow

Oh what fun! I take it SCA is Society for Creative Anachronism? Those folks put so much effort into their activities, it looks like. If you're involved with that I'm amazed that you can work, have a family and still find time to write! Wow!

Yup, that's the Society. I haven't been active for a while, about six years. I'm trying to start back up again. Slowly at first, I think. As for time-you haven't seen my house-total wreckage.

[217] Ah well, housekeeping is such a bother. I'd volunteer to lend a hand but I think you live nowhere near me (I'm in Massachusetts). And I'm rather bad at cleaning myself -- my roomates and I hire a cleaning crew to come in once a month to do a good scrub job.

But this reminds me of something I'd wondered about once, Isabeau: do you have a wishlist somewhere, like on Amazon.com or another retail site?

That's a good question. My feeling about it is that they're not immortal, but that they are long-lived. I believe I read somewhere that the mearas lived as long as Men-it would be nice for the Elves to have horses that lived at least that long, otherwise they would be continually (to them)breaking and training mounts. I definitely think that, like the mearas, they are extremely intelligent, and probably understand speech, even if they don't talk like Felarof supposedly did.

As for Arwen's horse, I have no idea. Though it wouldn't be totally lonely, as long as her brothers visited from time to time.

Blush. That's a mistake on my part, in that I'd been intending to take that sentence out and haven't fixed it yet. I'll go do that.

I think that Imrahil was looking for his nephew, perhaps because the King wanted Faramir. Remember, he was probably cuddled up with Heth for a while, maybe 2-3 hours, and hadn't been seen that morning. There was a lot going on, and he was probably needed to make some decision or other. Elrohir did indeed sense Heth's pain and mental disquiet and was looking for her. They probably met at the door.

That is nifty, isn't it? Didn't know Mike was going to do that. Feel free to tell him you like it, it would make his day!

That's the SCA person in me-knights and squires in the SCA wear spurs as a badge of office, and I believe medieval knights wore them continuously as well. Andra's an agile sort-he wouldn't have the problems I would if I tried that!

OK. It's basically a dark royal blue tunic and pants with black boots. Regular knights have the Swanship arms in white on the tunic, officers in white with silver thread. The Commander, Armsmaster and Horsemaster wear silver chains of office. Matching cloaks when appropriate, with officers bordered in silver. Esquires wear black leather belts, knight probationers white leather with a black border, knights a white belt. All the belts have a Swanship buckle. No horse tails on the helmets, though I thought at one point about a swan feather crest of some sort. I really like the regular Gondorian helmets in the movie with the wing motif, so imagine something similar. Not the fountain guard helmets with those huge wings, the ones with the feather design on the cheeks. Imri's helmet has a circlet with sapphires worked into it, as does Elphir's. When in armor, the knights wear blue tabards with their arms. The officers and the Princes' tabards are bordered and embroidered in silver.
